Britain; and should he regain his influence in
H upeh and Hunan, Great Britain could count upon
him for all support in the furtherance of Sino-
British trade.
The greatest menace to the peace of China
is Feng Yu-hsiang who is receiving arms from Russia.
Feng Yu-hsiang did at first enter into an agreement
with the Kwangsi Party to oust Chiang Kai-shek,
receiving as his reward the Province of Hupeh; but
the secret leaked out, and Chiang lost no time in
making a more alluring offer to Feng, namely, the
an
Province of Shangtung plus /immediate payment of
two million dollars. Feng accepted Chiang's offer,
thus leaving the Kwangsi-ites in the lurch at
the critical moment.
There is a movement on foot (General
Leung did not give detals) to "down" Feng Yu-hsiang.
Yen Shi-shan and Tang Seng-chi would be among the
first to effect this desirable end, if an
opportunity presented itself.
A political tug-of-war is at this
moment going on between Ghiang Kai-shek and Feng Yu-
hsiang.
If Feng wins, Chiang will of course fall.
If, however, Chiang wins, his fall will also eventuate,
and it will be effected by his own subordinates. So
far Ho Ying-chin has been his most loyal and useful
lieutenant, but General Leung has strong reasons
to believe that Chiang's downfall may be wrought
by this very man: it is merely a question of
opportunity.
Fighting between Kwangtung and Kwangsi is
inevitable, soon or late, in spite of the efforts
of the pacifists in the two provinces to prevent it.
